Increasing emphasis on energy saving
October 1st 2004

With its comprehensive range of high speed doors, Hart Door Systems can help companies substantially cut energy costs

Three hurricanes in less than a month has once again focused the world’s attention on climate change. For whatever reason and over what timescale, there is little doubt that the world is faced with rising temperatures and the call is out for action now to redress the situation.

In tandem, the call is also out for British industry to sort out its collective energy policies. Increasing energy costs are coming through and with Britain swinging from being a net exporter of oil to a net importer, the chances are that energy costs are set to rise further.

Which is where Speedor can make a significant contribution by providing a solution to heat loss experienced by manufacturers and warehouse/distribution facilities alike.

With businesses now facing the prospect of harsher than average and extreme weather conditions action needs to be taken to assess ways of reducing energy costs.

Speedors form integral parts of energy saving systems by reducing heat loss through factory and warehouse doors. One of Hart’s clients calculated that 40,000 cubic metres of heated air left their premises through just one door in one minute. Installing a Speedor reduced heating costs by £27,000 in the first year.

The fast, automatic action of Speedor complements any attempt to reduce energy costs. It can work in cold stores, clean rooms, areas where heat is essential for a manufacturing process, in loading bays open to the elements and high-traffic situations.

Project profiles

Within two weeks of the latest Speedor being installed by Hart Door Systems at Formica's Aycliffe site near Darlington, Formica's engineers had to reduce the setting of the factory's heating system by two degrees.

With five Speedors already on site, two more were added in a large, long, building.

As a result the plant's heating was set at 17c rather than 19c.

Speedors actions are so quick that they greatly reduced draughts which can cause problems during the Formica manufacturing process.

The Speedor installation pictured below forms an airlock at the Alcan Packaging plant in Cramlington, Northumberland.

Installed to maintain highlevels of hygiene necessary for the production of aluminium foil for the pharmaceutical industry, the Speedors replaced a roller shutter and a sectional overhead door.

There are now seven Speedors on site.

The company has also has recently completed the installation of another three Speedors at the Co. Durham plant of Schott Industrial Glass.

They have been installed on the Integrated Printing Line (M) to retain heat and reduce draughts in the production process and also to act as a safety door for an automatic loader that is also a part of the process.

Speedor are also in use on two other printing lines, essentially to keep dust out of the sensitive glass products production process.

The Speedor pictured right replaced a strip curtain door which allowed birds and dust to enter a raw materials storage area at a British Bakeries plant on Tyneside.

The new Speedor has eliminated the problems caused by the strip door and greatly helps in maintaining an ambient temperature of at least 15°C.

Hart Doors Systems has recently completed an installation of a Speedor using flymesh to allow ventilation but preventing insect infestation at the same time.

The door was installed at Fox’s Biscuits plant at Uttoxeter and features a breakaway bottom rail to minimize future repairs and downtime in the event of damage by forklift trucks.

This Speedor high-speed door range has helped Aggregate Industries, and its brand leader, Bradstone, successfully overcome potential damaging problems in a heatsensitive process on its shrink-wrapping conveyor line.

Speedor was selected as a system that could operate quickly and effectively within limited space.

Through its brand, Speedor, Hart can look at any production situation irrespective of complexity and come up with a solution which helps industry over come heat sensitive problems.
