Dock safety solutions
April 1st 2006

Insulation manufacturer, Knauf Insulation has two different safety solutions supplied by loading dock safety expert, Caljan Rite- Hite at its Merseyside headquarters.

The company has invested in a Global Wheel Lok (GWL) and a Safe T Lip Leveller.

Both these products improve safety and efficiency in a warehouse environment.

The GWL is a wheel restraint, which prevents the dangers of unplanned vehicle departure. It secures trailers with the rear axle up to 4m from the back of the trailer, and with tyres up to 1.12m in diameter.

Trucks are loaded/ unloaded whilst securely locked in place, and when finished, the restraint is unlocked, allowing the vehicle to move off safely.

The Safe T Lip Leveller helps prevent accidents at loading docks. It provides a solid barrier to prevent forklift trucks or goods from dropping or rolling off the edge of an open dock. The design and installation of the leveller for this application was "a challenge," commented Caljan Rite-Hite's Martin Wright.

"The dock had a very low height of just 700mm yet was required to service vehicles up to 1600mm. We overcame this by increasing the dock height using long steel ramps, and maintained a gradient of less than the recommended European standard of 12.5%. We also had specially designed handrails made to cater for regular width loads and for loads wider than the leveller platform."
