Blazing ahead with electric car August 1st 2008 The 'Bankhead Blazers' – the
Bankhead Academy team
supported by Norco, won
the 'Fastest Lap' award and
finished in third place in the
Scottish heats of the IMechE
Greenpower Formula 24
race, sponsored by Shell UK.
Greenpower and the Institute
of Mechanical Engineers are
promoting engineering and
technology in UK schools
through electric car building
challenges and races.
The Formula 24 challenge
requires teams to build an
endurance ready electric car
from a 240w, 24v DC electric
motor. Each team is also
supplied with four 12v lead
acid batteries (2 on the car
and 2 spares). Cars must be
designed and built within the
school with the help of
teachers, co-opted outside
engineers, parents and
sponsoring companies. Then
the school has to compete in
several 4 hour endurance
races against regional and
national schools. By coming
third, Bankhead Academy
has qualified to race in the
National Finals at Goodwood
Motor Circuit on the 19th
October 2008.
Norco Group has been
working with the 'Bankhead
Blazers' providing support,
parts and transportation.
"This project is not only
designed to captivate young
people's interest in
engineering, but also
demonstrates the
importance of electric power
and how it can be used to
help improve energy issues,"
says Amy Davidson,
marketing manager. More articles from Norco Group Ltd: |
