Making waste work
April 1st 2006

With environmental and waste management issues now part and parcel of everyday life for many companies, Pakawaste looks at how using effective waste handling equipment can help businesses meet obligations in this area

As concerns for the environment become an increasing issue, waste management is steadily reaching the top of many business agendas.

The introduction of waste legislation such as the Packaging and Landfill Directives and the WEE Directive, which will require the mandatory collection and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment, means that no organisation can afford to ignore their obligation to the environment.

Recycling and waste management is, of course, one of the most obvious means of fulfiling these obligations. However, this leaves businesses with another task - finding the right waste handling company to assist. So where do companies start? The answer is simple: look for a waste handling equipment supplier that has plenty of experience and demonstrates an innovative approach to the waste process.

One such company is Pakawaste.

Comprehensive portfolio

Celebrating 30 years in business this year, the Pakawaste Group is regarded as a market leader in the production and supply of waste handling equipment. Offering what is claimed to be the largest range of waste handling equipment in the UK, Pakawaste's comprehensive product portfolio ranges from static to portable compactors, vertical and horizontal balers, industrial and office shredders, Rotokrush equipment, bin to tipping equipment to name but a few machine types.

If you are unsure of the impact introducing high quality waste handling equipment can have on your business, consider the following. Using waste handling equipment supplied by Pakawaste, one of the North West's biggest shopping centres has been able to increase the amount of waste it recycles from 15% to more than 80%. The facility is now reaping the benefits of this in terms of vast cost and efficiency savings.

Although return on investment periods for waste management equipment such as compactors and balers are now more favourable than ever before, for some companies the initial capital outlay can still be an issue. For such applications Pakawaste offers re-manufactured waste handling machines. Supplied in an 'as new' condition, these units are refurbished to the highest standards and made available at extremely competitive prices.

For applications that require a bespoke solution, Pakawaste has its own CAD team enabling it to meet any individual company requirements.

The company also has a team of dedicated service engineers located throughout the country. As the company manufactures around 85% of all the machines it sells, it is ideally placed to service them and provides comprehensive support to customers.

As you would expect for a company with such a wide product range, Pakawaste's customers are from all areas of industry and commerce, including both the public and private sector.

Typical of the company's high profile customers is Land Rover. In an example of Pakawaste's problem solving innovation, it has supplied two VB56 vertical balers for use in Land Rover's demanding month-long 4x4 multi-sport challenge - the G4 Challenge.

All meal packaging, cardboard and plastic waste generated by the challengers on the venture will be disposed of using the balers, which will be mounted on the back of a truck, along with a generator, to follow the convoy.

The VB56 can reduce waste by up to 90% and is suitable for cardboard, paper, cans, plastics and shredded papers. It is easy to load by hand from above and has a large disposal/filling aperture. The material is compacted with up to 6 tonnes of pressure.

Pakawaste also produce a VB56 mini version.

Compactor upgrade

In a slightly more more conventional deal, pizza manufacturer Stateside Foods has come back to Pakawaste to upgrade its compactor. The Bolton-based company originally had a Portakrush 2000S static compactor which was loaded by hand.

As demand for its chilled and frozen pizzas grew, so did the volume of waste on site. As a result Stateside Foods required a larger compactor - the P2000HD version.

The HD model is the heavy duty version again designed to handle difficult food waste.

To compliment the bigger and better machine, the company also required a more efficient loading system. Pakawaste recommended adding a bin tipper system to the compactor which is designed to house and lift up to 1100 litre wheeled containers.
