Distribution centre gets drive-away protection August 1st 2005 Castell’s drive-away prevention system, Salvo, has been installed across the whole of Christian Salvesen’s 18-bay distribution centre at Lowestoft, Suffolk.
Despite already operating a system whereby drivers surrender their keys on arrival, and wheel chocks are used to hinder premature departures, Salvesen Lowestoft identified the need for the increased security that Salvo provides. Timeconscious drivers may hold duplicate sets of keys, while those determined to depart from a loading bay cannot be prevented from doing so by wheel chocks alone.
“We’ve found Salvo to be a very effective and reassuring system”, says Tony Spurgeon, operational support manager at Lowestoft. “There’s been very little complaint from drivers, and the staff have adapted to the changes easily.” Salvo’s normal operating procedure has been adapted slightly in accordance with the open bays found at Lowestoft. Staff collect a Salvo Susie lock from its storage box on the bay and ask the driver to remove the trailer’s emergency airline, thereby applying the trailer’s brakes. Fitting the Susie to the airline coupling prevents the airline from being reapplied and releases a uniquely-coded key. This key is then used to unlock the bay plate, so loading can begin, and remains trapped in the plate until loading is complete. More articles from Castell Safety International Ltd: |
