The first of the Health and Safety 08 events takes place on February 1st 2008 The first Health and Safety 08 event
of the year will be held at Sandown
Park, Esher, Surrey, on 26th and 27th
February 2008. The regional event
combines high quality, free to attend
seminars and an exhibition offering an
impressive range of product and service
suppliers and the most respected
independent safety organisations. The
event will also host the first of Combilift's
Regional Driver of the Year competitions
which will be overseen and judged by
Mentor Training. The 4-way capability of the
Combilift forklifts means that drivers will
not only be tested on their skills while
operating in forward and reverse modes,
but will also need to prove their control
and accuracy with the trucks while
travelling sideways.
The seminar programme will be
delivered by industry experts and by IOSH
(Institution of Occupational Safety and
Health) members representing the London
Metropolitan Branch. These will include a
whole host of practical seminars covering
continuing problems that those working in
the sector face in their day to day working
lives such as Manual Handling and PPE
selection.
Handling responsibilities
For example, the presentation on day two
(27th February) about Manual Handling
from Martin Kirk, of IOSH will provide
attendees with information about an
employer's responsibilities in relation to
manual handling and will look at the 2002
update of the Manual Handling Operations
Regulations (MHOR). Guideline manual
handling limits will also be discussed
including the use of the Manual Handling
Assessment Chart (MAC) tool to help with
risk assessments of handling situations.
A great aspect of the seminar content
available at the Health and Safety 08 event
is the breadth of information available. A
major change to the Sandown event's
seminar programme for 2008 is the
introduction of some new elements that
reflect the latest thinking in regard to
occupational health.
On the 26th February, Liz Skelton of
IOSH delivers a seminar entitled Stress
Management that addresses the practical
application of the HSE's stress management
standards and looks at making the link
between good health and good business.
Another topic which may be of interest is
Corporate Manslaughter/Homicide – The
Impact. Delivered by Kevin Bridges, this
seminar discusses the Corporate
Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act
that comes into force in April 2008 with the
stated aim of making it easier to convict
companies and other large organisations
where serious management failures result
in death.
The exhibition element of Health and
Safety 08 is also impressive with many of
the well known names in the health and
safety industry exhibiting everything from
PPE and respiratory protection to first aid
and machinery safety. Of particular interest
to readers of H&SS are the exhibitors with
materials handling related products such as
Tawi, showing its range of solutions to
substitute manual lifting, and Combilift,
demonstrating the versatility of its
multidirectional forklifts. Also of interest
will be exhibitors with products for safe
warehouse management like Racking
Protection and Management, which
provides practical solutions to minimise
rack damage. Another area worthy of
mention is training, with many companies,
such as Principal People, able to offer
accredited training across a number of
different areas.
With the breadth of information
available, a visit represents a positive use of
time for visitors from virtually any industry.
The little extras, such as free seminars and
free parking all really do help to provide a
worthwhile experience for the timepressured
visitor.
