Saxon lifts take the drain August 1st 2005 Saxon has designed and manufactured four heavy duty scissor lifts to assist loading and unloading kiln cars, as part of a £4m investment in new production facilities for Hepworth Drainage Products in Derbyshire.
The pipes and associated products manufactured at the site vary considerably in size and weight, with the largest weighing 100kg.
Fragile prior to firing, the clay products need careful handling. A detailed risk assessment formed the basis of the decision to use scissor lift tables in conjunction with overhead manipulators to handle them.
Saxon engineers worked with a Hepworth project team to design a loading and unloading system based on Saxon USL2-1.6-0.96, two tonne capacity hydraulic scissor lifts platforms.
Two scissor platforms operate on each side of the variable height kilncar loading station. Two lifting platforms are turntable mounted for ease of access, with the two kiln side lifts recessed into shallow pits to allow the kilncar to transfer over the lifts prior to entering the kiln. The whole system is controlled centrally and electromechanically interlocked for safety.
