Easy machine guard system
April 1st 2005

Leuze Mayser says its safe Entry-Exit machine guarding system is now a common feature on many pallet strapping and wrapping installations undertaken by Gordian Strapping.

The unit works by creating an invisible barrier that stops hazardous machinery should people encroach within a given distance – yet allows full product flow. Supplied as a ready made solution, installation is simple, according to the company. Gordian Strapping has adopted the Leuze system on its palletised and unpalletised ‘void’ pack strapping applications and shrink-wrapping lines.

Typical of the machines it supplies is an automated vertical strapping machine with a sword unit to penetrate the pallet voids to allow the strap to secure the product to the pallet. In the brick industry, where unpalletised packs are common, polyester straps can be applied with strap tension up to 800N to create a secure, tight pack.

During installation, fixed guards are normally mounted wither side of the strapping/wrapping machine, the only unprotected areas being the conveyor in-feed and outfeed routes. These are now guarded by Leuze’s Entry-Exit system. Any persons walking into the path of these high speed machines is instantly recognised and the machine brought to a halt.

According to Gordian MD, Tony Cox, “it comes as a complete kit – fully preconfigured – so the site engineers simply plug the units together.”
