Pallet warsJune 1st 2009
The Timber Packaging and Pallet Federation (TIMCON) has commented in response to publicity released by plastics manufacturers in the US during May.
"We need to clarify the benefits of timber pallets and packaging," states John Dye,TIMCON President, and international director of the US National Wooden Pallet & Container Association (NWPCA).
The NWPCA has expressed concerns over the use of deca-bromine, which has been added to plastic pallets by some US manufacturers. The chemical has been introduced as a fire retardant. It says some studies have shown products that contain deca-bromine can leach, making them potentially unsafe for use in food chains, or dangerous to the environment.
