TIMCON's thought for food industry
December 1st 2007

TIMCON says the food industry should consider wooden pallets and packaging as opposed to alternatives. With new independently developed software, TIMCON members can calculate carbon savings available by specifying wooden pallets, so buyers can make informed choices.

The confederation says wood is more socially responsible (as 95 per cent of UK softwood comes from sustainable forests), cost effective and hygienic for goods storage and transportation.

Absorbing CO2 as the wood grows, the resulting pallets and packaging are biodegradeable and recyclable once they become beyond repair.

In terms of hygiene, it claims 'laboratory and fieldtest studies in Germany, Switzerland and Nordic countries' show bacteria survive better on plastics than wood'.

Of cleaning methods it says microwaving pasteurises wooden pallets and packaging with bacteria resistance at least as good as plastic and steel.
