High speed and handheld
June 1st 2009

Vitronic reports that its VICAM-mobile portable handheld camera scanner is a big hit with customers.

The device enables quick, accurate parcel routing by identifying customer related data on parcel labels. It weighs only 800g and features an ergonomic design, allowing operators to work comfortably.

"We have had significant interest in the handheld VICAMmobile since its release last year," says Malcolm Smith, UK sales manager at Vitronic. "This is set to continue throughout 2009.

VICAM-mobile's portability makes it flexible, and suitable for scanning irregularly shaped parcels that are normally difficult to process, such as bicycles, tyres, and automobile components." VICAM-mobile uses a high-speed, variable-focus camera to capture images of parcel labels. The system interprets them using optical character recognition (OCR) techniques and algorithms.

This allows VICAM-mobile to read barcodes, 2D codes, damaged or marked codes, handwritten address information, and supplier numbers. Companies use data acquired by VICAMmobile to sort and track parcels, improve efficiency, and reduce costs.

The camera claims to operate up to twenty times faster than traditional laser scanners. When combined with videocoding – which allows the manual input of unreadable labels – the company says it produces read rates of 99.9 per cent.
