Mobile battery changing trolley
December 1st 2004

Thanks to an innovative approach to battery changing and charging, wholesale distributor, Palmer and Harvey McLane, is able to utilise its fleet of Atlet warehouse trucks during continuous operations at its Fareham distribution warehouse.

The site is one of the first in the UK to use Atlet’s new Batsman mobile battery changing trolley.

This enables the changing of batteries whenever required so trucks can operate round the clock.

This allows older trucks to be fully charged and ready for work during the busiest part of the day. The Batsman has also helped to save valuable warehouse space.

Based on an Atlet powered pallet transporter chassis, the Batsman is simply moved alongside the lift truck where the battery is transferred on to it. The depleted battery is then moved to the charging area and swapped with a fully charged one, which is then taken back to the lift truck. This entire process normally takes less than five minutes.

Atlet has supplied two versions of the Batsman – a powered model that moves the batteries with a magnetic ram for reach trucks and a high level order picker; and a smaller manual roll-on/roll-off unit for pallet truck and low level order picker batteries.

Using the Batsman means that for each type of battery, only one spare charging location is needed.

This means only five charging stations are required for four reach truck batteries and eight stations are required for seven order picker batteries.
