Rolling out the battery
April 1st 2008

Nissan has announced the development of a safer faster battery roll-out system for its three-wheel TX counterbalanced series, providing a solution to the time consuming and potentially hazardous procedure of craning replacement batteries in and out of a forklift truck.

The forklift truck side panel is removed and the roller bed is put into position against the vehicle and the battery is moved in or out.

Nissan says the procedure can be completed by one operator in "a matter of minutes", using the new rig in conjunction with a pallet truck. This also cancels out the risks of overhead working. The roll-out mechanism is ideal for accommodating the heavier high capacity batteries used on the High Performance versions of the TX series trucks, as the transfer system's main rollers are solid metal.

The TX truck series three wheel design aims for best manoeuvrability in the warehouse, bridging the gap between Nissan's warehouse range and standard four wheel counterbalance electric trucks. The three wheel models also feature a double rear wheel as standard to provide extra stability – an important feature for small trucks travelling without loads.

When reversing out of racking the Syncro steering feature provides straight line travel.

There are five versions in six capacities from 1.25 to 2t, in the AC-powered TX range, with Compact, Standard and High Performance options.

Nissan's Risk Reduction System is designed to create a cabin space providing all-round visibility with controls dedicated to secure operation. A mast lock system prevents the mast being tilted or the forks lowered when the operator has left the seat.

When the truck is turning, the system automatically restricts acceleration and speed. At high rates of travel it reduces lift speed.

If the truck is on a gradient and the accelerator is released, an anti roll-back device ensures that the truck can only reverse slowly, and a new style parking brake incorporates a lock to prevent its accidental release.

The chassis of the TX Syncro has a wedge shaped design to ensure optimum manoeuvrability in confined areas.
