Zero maintenance batteries
April 1st 2004

Hawker Traction is now supplying all the batteries for the lift truck fleet at ASDAs regional distribution centre in Chepstow. Two Evolution zero-maintenance batteries have been supplied for each electric truck.

Hawker has also installed high frequency chargers to service 260 of the batteries and is trialling an IT-based system to provide real-time data on battery condition and to ensure proper battery rotation.

Installed in partnership with Jungheinrich, the systems are geared to minimise truck downtime and also offer the potential for substantial electricity savings.

The chargers are installed in a dedicated room in which a purpose built battery change cart operates.

The chargers are the compact LifePlus, which when used with Hawkers Evolution battery, can cut electricity costs for charging by as much as 30%.
