Helping to reduce costs

Fleet management system aids decision making says Barloworld's Roger Massey

Barloworld Handling has developed a telemetry device which can be fitted to all types of forklift trucks and other handling equipment to capture live performance data for analysis over a dedicated web portal. Data is transmitted directly from the truck without the need for additional hardware onsite or human intervention to retrieve it.

The fleet management system collects and reports truck performance such as daily run time, hourmeter readings, impacts, maintenance completion and cost of ownership information, which helps operators reduce cost over time, for example, by reducing damage or reallocating assets.

The current climate is encouraging operators and suppliers alike to look for innovations in the management of their fleets to reduce running costs. The Barloworld system has been implemented and proven in multi-site operations for brands such as Freightliner, Britvic and Pall-Ex.

Our fleet management system records the utilisation of each truck so that where appropriate we can plan maintenance according to the actual working hours of the fleet rather than a set period of time. This means servicing is attuned to the needs of the fleet and potentially highlights issues earlier leading to reduced downtime.

When fitted to the latest Hyster forklifts, the system even has the ability to alert Barloworld to faults remotely, helping it to respond quickly and effectively with appropriate parts.

Our telemetry device integrates with the Canbus nervous system of the latest Hyster forklift trucks, such as the Hyster electric warehousing trucks and engine counterbalance forklifts, and transmits equipment fault codes straight back to Barloworld as and when they occur. This can help our service teams to respond quickly to minimise downtime and avoid preventable repairs.

The fleet management telemetry device also records impacts over a set level of severity and sends an email notification of any accidents as they happen. With enhanced management awareness managers can target damage reduction.
