Batteries directive covered April 1st 2009 "With regard to the new
Batteries Directive that came
into force in September, we
can reassure our customers
that not only will Exide be
complying with the
Directive, but in fact, we
have already been offering a
collection service and
recycling our motive power
batteries," says Nigel Darke,
Business Director Exide
Technologies (CMP
Batteries).
Darke explains that the
impetus behind the Directive
is largely aimed at the
disposal of consumer
batteries, including those in
electronic equipment. The
intention is to ensure that
batteries do not end up in
landfill sites. It places
responsibilities on
manufacturers of such
equipment to properly
dispose of batteries at the
end of their life – the
implication being that as
much of the product as
possible should be recycled.
"Recycling is an area in
which we are ahead of the
game. We already offer a
collection and recycling
service to our customers. It
is also a fact that 83.6% of
our traction battery is
recyclable. Of course, a large
part of that consists of lead
so it makes good business
sense – as well as being
environmentally responsible
– to recycle traction
batteries."
Darke advises that if any
forklift truck user has an
Exide traction battery that
has reached the end of its
service life, they should
contact their local Exide
sales manager or technician
– or call the number below
to discuss the possibility of a
replacement. More articles from GNB Industrial Power: |
