Management system enables fleet size to be cut
October 1st 2004

As part of an on going operation to improve operations, BMW Group Plant Swindon reviewed its materials handling fleet. As a result it re-appointed Barloworld to install and maintain a new 126-strong Hyster fleet.

To meet requirements at the plant, Barloworld introduced some innovations, including the Davis Derby TruckLOG fleet management system and use of the Davis Derby Speed Zoning system (pictured) to ensure truck speed is automatically set when they enter or leave various parts of the plant.

Better truck utilisation and increased fleet management information provided by the TruckLOG system has enabled BMW Plant Swindon to reduce its fleet from 189 units to just 133.

The system involves each operator being totally responsible for his truck from the moment he logs on with his PIN number to the time he checks the truck at the end of shift and logs it off as being in full operating condition.

Each truck’s movements are monitored in real time via information that is automatically collected electronically by five base stations on site and then downloaded to a central server.
