Four-way trucks show their mettle
December 1st 2007

Fifteen Combilift 4-way forklifts are looking after the handling and storage of AJN Steel's substantial stock at its new premises at Kentford near Newmarket. After ordering its first Combilift to handle long lengths of steel in 2001, the company has ordered more in varying sizes, culminating in nine new LPG models ordered specifically to meet the new site's demands.

Well known for its ability to customise its product range, two of the nine trucks are 7t models uprated with 12t back axles to enable them to deal easily with harsh working conditions and extreme loads in the outside storage areas. The other seven trucks are 4t machines used in the storage sheds in guided aisle operations for taking product to cutting machines or shot blasting facilities. In the guided aisle systems, the trucks virtually steer themselves, speeding operations while protecting both product and racking from damage.

AJN Steel md, Alan Boyden, says the firm now enjoys the best of both worlds: saving space in the storage areas and handling long loads more safely and efficiently. "All the operators have noticed the benefits," he says.

AJN truck driver Aaron Main says that the company's first Combilift is still as reliable as ever after clocking up 13,000 hours.

The Combilift range now covers 2.5t - 14t in LPG, diesel or electric versions.
