Kitting solution saves time and space August 1st 2006 BITO Storage Systems has developed a new parts kitting system, which increases storage density and accommodates a greater number of components.
The new Kitting Bay solution can handle a mix of pallets, metal stillages and cartons or plastic containers.
It is designed to allow picking from the front – with pick by light if desired – with empty return and replenishment from the rear.
BMW has already deployed the system at its Hams Hall engine plant, gaining greater capacity in restricted space and increased efficiency for what is said to have been a relatively low level of investment.
The parts kitting areas already existed, but did not have a high enough capacity. A number of solutions were considered, including a fully automated store. BITO was able to develop the Kitting Bay solution with BMW, delivering the required increase in capacity for less than 10% of the cost of full automation, with less risk and in record time.
