Don't go off the rails
October 1st 2007

The new BPS 8 bar code positioning system from Leuze Mayser provides an optical measuring method for monitoring and controlling the position of rail-mounted industrial trucks, overhead carrier systems, hoists, rack handling and similar automatic transport systems to an accuracy of ±1mm. The BPS 8, which mounts directly on the 'workpiece' carrier, determines its position relative to a bar code on a plastic encoded tape [BCB] which has a selfadhesive backing for easy application to the carrier gantry frame; it is estimated that a tape measuring 100m in length can be positioned around a path in around 30 minutes. It allows both vertical and horizontal corners to be detected without defining a preferred assembly direction, which adds to flexibility of tape positioning around the path. The new BPS 8 uses visible red laser to scan the position information encoded on the BCB tape and with interfaces such as PROFIBUS, SSI or RS 485 a newly calculated position value is made available to the higher level control system every 2ms.
