Hoisting at cryogenic temperatures January 1st 2011 J D Neuhaus has carried out
successful tests at a cryogenic test
chamber in the Netherlands for
operation of one of its hydraulic
monorail hoists at -450C. Specified for
on and offshore operations, the hoists
could also be used in other polar
operations such as scientific land
stations, and on commercial fishing,
expedition and processing vessels.
The JDN standard range of air or
hydraulically operated hoists is ATEX
rated and insensitive to both
humidity and dust while operating
within a temperature range of -200C
to +700C.However, following
inquiries regarding a specialised oil
and gas lifting application under
extreme arctic conditions, an adapted
EH-20 monorail hoist was put on
extended testing at minus 450C. To
ensure smooth starting, the hoist was
fitted with a pre-heating device to
raise the temperature of the drives to
-250C before operation. The hoist was
also equipped with cryogenic
hydraulic oil to ensure efficient
operation within a temperature range
of -450C to +400C.
Standard monorail hoists available
from JDN can be supplied for lift
capacities from 20 to 100 tonnes. More articles from J.D.Neuhaus Limited: |
