Steel stockholder trebles capacity August 1st 2005 Demag’s cranes have helped treble storage capacity at NSD’s steel stockholding facility in Scunthorpe.
Over the last seven years NSD’s national steel distribution business has experienced a seven fold increase in turnover, necessitating an increase in storage capacity: In January last year it began developing nine acres of land it had acquired adjacent to the site.
Fundamental to developing the increased storage area was the ability to lift and move steel to all parts of the site. To this end, Demag installed four 30m span portal cranes, each giving coverage of a 30 x 200m area of the stockholding yard. The 8 + 8 tonne capacity of the cranes was specified to ensure that trailers could be loaded and unloaded in one lift to boost speed of turnaround.
Addressing outdoor operation issues, Inverter controls are incorporated within the integrated wire rope hoists to provide accurate and smooth lifting and movement of loads, even in windy conditions.
The radio remote control crane systems also feature an integrated cable wheel reeling drum to ensure safe control of power supply cables throughout the 200m length of travel. Demag also installed a 30m span 8 + 8 tonne semi-portal crane adjacent to NSD’s existing storage facility. More articles from Demag Cranes & Components Ltd: |
