‘You’re getting it too good’ fleet managers warned May 14th 2010 The Fork Lift Truck Association has warned fleet managers that cut-price deals are “unrealistically and unsustainably low”. The FLTA’s research cites the example of a 2.0 tonne electric counterbalance truck which cost £107 per week on contract hire in 1989 (£191 in today’s money) but costs £93 in 2010.
The association conceded that we are in a buyer’s market but warned that continued heavy discounting could damage safety and service standards, saying it would not be surprised if dealers cut corners to stay afloat.
The FLTA has also urged fleet and warehouse managers to carry out adequate servicing, estimating that preventative maintenance has been cut by up to 50% in the recession.
“With fork lifts already udner strain such drastic action could place a customer at risk of falling foul of the law,” said an FLTA spokesperson.
The FLTA is advising managers to secure the right contract and not necessarily the cheapest one. More articles from Handling & Storage Solutions: |
