Managing workplace transport risk
August 30th 2007

A new web based resource aimed at improving work related transport safety is to be launched this month. Approved by the HSC earlier this year, The Route Map will provide information and links to agreed good practice and current legislation.

Workplace transport is a major cause of fatal and major injuries in the workplace. Since 1998/99 there has been an annual average of 61 fatalities, over 2,150 major injuries and over 4,270 over 3-day injuries. Work related deaths on the Public Highway are estimated to be around 1,000 annually.

The Department of Transport and the Police will continue to lead on accidents on the Public Highway with the option of HSE assistance if they believe there have been breaches of health and safety legislation.

HSE’s Route Map will provide information and links to agreed good practice and current legislation that will be:

  • practical and easy to use
  • geared towards identifying problems and providing the duty holder with guidance on how to put them right
  • flexible and adaptable to business needs
  • applicable to businesses across all sectors
  • advice on preventative actions that can be taken to reduce risks associated with moving and delivering goods

As part of its continuing programme to promote workplace safety Voss Training Services is sponsoring a Workplace Transport Safety Conference in Liverpool on 17 October 2007, which will cover both workplace transport safety (on-site) and work related road risk (public highway). when presentations will be given by senior HSE personnel.

The conference is a must for any business operating company vehicles on the highway and powered trucks and vehicles on-site in the workplace.

Full details will be available on Voss' website:
