A Safe Berth with Combilift at Atlas
June 18th 2007

Atlas Caravans has been able to cut the number of forklift trucks operating at its manufacturing facility while improving handling and storage procedures and introducing better health and safety practices.

The magic ingredient for all of the above has been the 4-way technology of the Combilift forklift trucks.

Atlas had operated a fleet of 12 counterbalance forklifts until recently, but was becoming increasingly aware of the limitations of these.

“Our manufacturing site is extensive at 20 acres, but very old, and not at all purpose built for our operation. The tight corners, restricted areas and uneven surfaces posed considerable access problems when trying to manoeuvre large loads with counterbalance trucks. As 60% of our incoming materials can be classed as oversized or very awkward to handle this was not an ideal scenario,” explains purchasing director David Upfield.

Four 4tonne and two 3tonne capacity diesel powered Combilifts are now used as a universal handling tool throughout the manufacturing process.

“The decision to adopt the Combilift 4-way system was made after widespread consultation across the workforce, and since the trucks have been here, everyone has benefited from the advantages. The drivers are very happy with them, and the Health and Safety officer Jim Billany has been able to implement better procedures in line with the company’s policy of continuous improvement of working practices. Thanks to the trucks’ abilities to travel sideways with long loads resting on the platform, for example, we have eradicated risky high-level transportation of loads above other obstacles,” comments David.
