Combilifts iron out handling problems for AJN Steel October 29th 2007 A total of 15 Combilift 4-way forklifts are now working at AJN Steel’s new premises at Kentford, near Newmarket. AJN Steel supplies customers across East Anglia, the East Midlands and North London.
An initial Combilift was ordered in 2001 as an alternative to counterbalance trucks which were not coping well with the 18 metre loads and therefore compromising certain safety procedures. The Combilift’s ability to transform storage and handling led to further orders and the trucks now handle the complete range of varying sized product such as universal beams, flat bars, angles and columns.
Two of the new nine-strong fleet are 7 tonne capacity Combilifts, uprated with 12 tonne back axles to enable them to deal with the harsh working conditions. These work mainly in the cantilever racking in the outside storage areas. The seven new 4-tonne machines are used in the storage sheds in guided aisle operations or for taking product to cutting machines or shot blasting facilities. The Combilift guided aisle system speeds up operations while protecting both product and racking from damage.
"We have the best of both worlds, we can save storage space due to the 4-way ability, the flexibility means we are always equipped with the right truck for the job, and we have got rid of risky high level manoeuvres associated with the counterbalance trucks," says Alan Boyden, managing director.
The current Combilift range now encompasses 15 models with capacities from 2.5 – 14 tonnes, with LPG, diesel or electric power.
