Doosan airline fleets take off
April 20th 2008 Two new fleets of Doosan forklifts are now in operation at Glasgow’s Prestwick Airport and Manston’s Kent International Airport, thanks to a deal by Doosan’s national accounts partners, Rushlift.
Run by New Zealand-based company, Infratil, the Airports have comprehensive freight handling capabilities at Glasgow, including an £8 million 1500m2 freight building constructed in 1998; a new £2.75 million maintenance hangar constructed for Polar Air and a maintenance hangar for Ryanair; plus a direct ‘aircraft to lorry’ system at Kent which handles up to 30,000 tonnes of freight each year, mostly fresh produce from Africa.
To help the operators load aircraft pallets directly on to the lorries, a special offset cab was designed and built by Doosan.
Doosan’s national accounts manager, Ian Blackledge, believes the company’s flexible approach to finding an innovative solution helped secure the deal. Said Ian: “A lot of work went into the development of the Kent machines and a great deal of groundwork was carried out by the Rushlift team. It’s a simple and elegant solution to the problem and one that all parties are very pleased with.”
Doosan aims to become a Top 5 forklift producer by 2010 and sales revenue from forklifts is approaching half a billion dollars. Doosan’s stock market value has risen by a staggering 400% since the company acquired the old Daewoo forklift business in 2005.
