Moving house with Combilift
February 13th 2008

Birmingham based Space4 housing solutions has taken delivery of its second fleet of Combilift 4-way forklifts to ensure the continued streamlined and safe handling of increasingly large loads of raw materials and finished product.

Space4 manufactures closed panel MMC systems for public and private housing at its 220,000ft² facility in Castle Bromwich, and has an output of around 70 complete houses per week. “Our previous experience and satisfaction with an initial fleet of Combilifts proved them to be the ideal trucks for the job, so we were happy to put in a repeat order," says site services manager Bob Preston. "We deal with very bulky raw materials, and our finished products - 12m lengths of floor cassettes and 2.7m high side panels, are difficult to handle. The factory is also narrow with stanchions at regular intervals, so we really need a very special piece of handling equipment."

The five LPG powered Combilifts work intensively in quite a harsh environment, handling timber, cement particle board and finished product They also manoeuvre goods around the narrow confines of the manufacturing area. Due to the evolving nature of the Space4’s materials and the implementation of the new loading methods, the company worked closely with Paul Raymond of handling specialist Abex to ensure that the specifications of the new fleet were 100% compatible with Space4’s other equipment. Bob Preston’s verdict: “We couldn’t operate with anything else.”
