Combilift is the hot favourite for QHT
July 17th 2008

A heavy duty Combilift 4-way forklift has led to safer handling procedures and opened up new business opportunities for Rotherham based Quality Heat Treatment (QHT). QHT specialises in furnace heat treatment for castings, forgings and fabrications, and handles very heavy, at times extremely hot and potentially hazardous loads. Safe handling was therefore a major issue for engineering director Paul Mattock.

Before the Combilift was delivered, QHT had a counterbalance forklift, but manoeuvrability was very limited, and handling longer loads with it was tricky and potentially dangerous. “The Combilift has given us more flexibility and a competitive edge,” says Paul. “The truck’s 4-way ability means that we can now treat 6.5m long bars, which can be transported sideways through the 3m wide doorway to the furnace.”

QHT’s Combilift can carry 9t at 1m load centre, so is well equipped to offload and handle the heaviest bars weighing up to 13.5t. It has a longer than standard 2m deck to accommodate very bulky items, and a spreader beam to support very long loads when they come out of the furnace at a temperature of 1000°. "The Combilift is the safest solution," says Paul, "and we couldn’t cope with the materials we handle with any other truck."
