Improved handling in the pipeline with Aisle-Masters
July 17th 2008

Three Aisle-Master articulated forklifts have increased storage capacity and improved efficiency at GPS PE Pipe Systems’ 40,000ft² National Distribution Centre in the West Midlands. GPS manufactures polyethylene and multi-layer pipe systems, and had previously used reach trucks, but recent growth and changes to the product lines prompted planning and logistics Manager Nick Gliddon to look at alternatives. Following delivery of the first Aisle-Master, an order for two more quickly followed, due to the truck’s operational versatility and ability to work in much tighter aisles than the reach trucks.

“We have reconfigured the racking layout so stock location is much easier and quicker,” says Nick. “Cushioned tyres and suspension mean that the expansion joints in the floor are no longer an issue and we can avoid the added expense of potential damage to trucks and redoing the floor. The investment in the Aisle-Masters is integral for way forward for increased efficiency all round. We have earmarked the use of two new buildings on site around the abilities of the trucks, where we can adopt the narrow-aisle system for an impressive pallet density in a relatively small space.”

Aisle-Masters work inside and out, and the range incorporates electric and LPG models which can operate in aisles of just 1.75m, with capacities of up to 2.5t and lift heights of up to 12.5m available. The trucks are designed and manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Monaghan, Ireland, where build quality and reliability feature high on the agenda.
