Freestanding storage canopy
May 21st 2008

SCA Packaging has recently commissioned Global MSI to manufacture and install a storage canopy at its Thatcham plant.

A leading manufacturer of customer specific packaging, SCA required a canopy to stand adjacent to an existing building. It provides dry storage of finished product and wooden pallets.

A structural assessment of the existing building was not necessary. Global MSI designed the 702m² canopy to be freestanding and incorporate similar details to the existing structure. It features vertical cladding on two elevations and utilises transluscent profiled GRP sheets in the wall and roof, allowing natural light into the storage area.

Global was able to further customise the build by tailoring the rainwater piping to discharge into the existing drainage system, to avoid localised areas of pooling water.

Global’s in-house team carried out the structural design, drawing, manufacture, project-management and installation of the canopy. The project was completed on time and on budget with no health and safety issues to report.

All Global structures are site specific with consideration given to issues such as overall size, shape, height, drainage and cladding requirements. Storage and loading areas are busy, high traffic areas, so column placement and number is especially important. Site-specific design means that columns are placed according to customer requirements, thus offering minimum disruption to the site operation.

All surveys, concept designs and quotations are given at no cost for sites in the UK.
