Future Electronics puts trust in Witron for new DC in Leipzig
May 21st 2008

Canadian company, Future Electronics, is the third largest distributor of electronic components worldwide, with more than 6000 staff members employed in 220 subsidiaries over 34 countries. Future Electronics recently awarded WITRON Logistik + Informatik the contract to plan and realise the warehouse logistics of a new distribution centre in Leipzig, Germany. The move follows Witron's success at a first automated distribution centre in the USA, which has resulted in Future putting its trust again in the expertise of the Parkstein logistics provider, this time for a distribution centre in Germany.

Operating since 2005, Montreal-based Future Electronics chose Witron to provide its logistics centre in Memphis, Tennessee and has been highly satisfied with the results in terms of cost effectiveness, efficiency, and quality – all leading to a successful return on investment. According to statements from the company, the state-of-the-art system in North America is said to be the showcase of the entire enterprise. Thanks to these positive experiences with Witron and the OPS – Order Picking Solution – Future decided to continue the partnership in its European expansion.

The distribution centre, a 15,000sqm greenfield site, will supply electronics manufacturers all over Europe and the Middle East with semi-conductors, passive contact components, LCD displays, wireless transmission media, RFID solution modules and a multitude of other electronic components.

The modular Witron tote picking OPS (Order Picking System) has been chosen for the distribution centre in Leipzig because it offers the best possible solution to handling a wide range of products. The articles will be provided and picked in sequence at 20 workstations using the goods-to-man principle and then packed into dispatch cartons.

As a general contractor, Witron will be responsible for the design and implementation of all logistical components – IT, control system, conveyor system, and tote and pallet steel construction. The automated small parts warehouse, which includes 10 automated storage and retrieval (AS/RS) crane aisles with 255,000 tote and 4400 pallet locations, will be able to store 66,000 different articles. The design of a double-deep racking structure enables efficient and space-saving storage without any problems, despite a multitude of very small-volume articles. Daily output will be 4200 packages from 18,000 picks per day. Investment amounts to 20.5m Euros and productive use is planned for the beginning of 2010.
