Chilling Out at MKG Foods April 27th 2009 Two AC electric powered Aisle-Master articulated forklifts are keeping the supplies flowing in Nottingham based MKG Foods’ cold-store, braving temperatures of around minus 22°C to minus 27°C.
MKG Foods, one of the UK’s leading independent frozen food distributors, needed an alternative to man-down turret trucks in the 24,000 ft² storage area. Warehouse Manager Wayne Merrin wanted to retain narrow aisle operation, whilst avoiding drawbacks experienced with the old VNA system such as damage to guide rails and machines, and the limiting indoor-only use of trucks. The Aisle-Master’s versatile indoor/outdoor operation and its manoeuvrability in the narrow aisles has proved to be the perfect recipe for success.
“They have definitely made life a lot easier,“ says Wayne; “productivity is up – we can easily cope with 700 pallet movements per week, and the whole operation is slicker.” The two cold-store chambers accommodate 1,000 pallet spaces, and the fast turnaround achieved with the Aisle-Masters is particularly beneficial, as speed is a vital ingredient when dealing with frozen foods.
The cold-store environment can be unforgiving on equipment, quickly draining batteries for example. However, the 930 amp batteries fitted in MKG’s Aisle-Masters are more than powerful enough to counteract this, and the Aisle-Master manufacturers have incorporated other specific features to ensure reliable operation throughout long shifts in extreme conditions. Cold-store spec Aisle-Masters will work in temperatures as low as minus 40°C.
