Three arrested after warehouse fire February 25th 2010 Three fire service staff have been arrested over the deaths of four firefighters in a Warwickshire warehouse in 2007.
Warwichshire police issued a statement reading: “Three men who were arrested today [24 February] in connection with the fire in which four fire fighters lost their lives in 2007 are still being questioned.
“This morning a 43 year old man from Nuneaton, a 49 year old man from Leamington and a 48 year old man from the Warwick area presented themselves at a Warwickshire police station.
“They are being questioned on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter and offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
“The fire fighters died fighting a fire at a vegetable packing plant at Atherstone on Stour in November 2007.”
The building was built as a warehouse but was in use as a vegetable packing plant.
The British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association has stated the incident highlights the need for better fire control in larger warehouses.
BAFSA, with other groups (Sprinkler Coordination Group, National Fire Sprinkler Network, Chief Fire Officers' Association and European Fire Sprinkler Network), has been campaigning for several years to eliminate the situation which permits warehouses as large as 19,000m2 to be constructed without sprinklers or fire compartments.
