Road transport hit by latest Treasury cuts June 17th 2010 A £1.1 billion scheme to improve the A14 has been suspended in the latest round of spending cuts announced today by Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander.
The road would have been widened to six lanes between Cambridge and Huntingdon. The move is part of a package of measures targeting commitments made by the Labour government with 12 projects dropped, saving £2bn and 12 suspended saving £8.5bn.
Alexander said: “The last Government committed to spend money it simply did not have. It made commitments it knew the next Government could not fulfill and in doing so cynically played politics with the hopes of our communities.
“The actions I have set out today shows that this Government will take responsible spending decisions, which, although sometimes difficult, will be guided by fairness and the overriding need to tackle the deficit.” More articles from Handling & Storage Solutions: |
