Hammond ponders steep transport cuts May 28th 2010 New Transport Secretary Philip Hammond MP has revealed on the BBC2 programme Daily Politics that government spending cuts would “quite likely” make the government unpopular.
At the Department for Transport, Hammond added the department would have to “take its share of the burden in deal with the fiscal crisis but I will focus on ensuring the department supports growth and combats climate change”.
“These two aims are not in conflict,” he added.
The Department for Transport must find £683m in spending cuts this year.
This is likely to mean the scaling back or canceling of road and rail projects.
Hammond took over as Secretary of State for Transport in the new Conservative Liberal Democrat coalition government.
An MP since 1997, Hammond succeeds Lord Adonis of the previous administration.
The Conserative MP for Runnymede and Weybridge has won the post despite Theresa Villiers acting as Shadow Secretary of State for Transport since July 2007.
Hammond has a wide range of business experience in small and medium-sized companies in manufacturing, property & construction and oil & gas, both in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. More articles from Handling & Storage Solutions: |
