Witron to build automated warehouse for Coop in Oslo
January 13th 2011

Coop in Norway, which turns over 4 billion euros and has 24% market share in the country, has unveiled plans to build a distribution centre covering a variety of temperature zones.

Systems integrator Witron Logistik + Informatik Gmbh won the tender despite stiff competition due to a future proof overall concept as well as extensive experience in similar projects.

"The complete concept impressed us regarding its cost-effectiveness, ergonomics, energy efficiency and flexibility," says Halvor Nassvik at Coop Norge Handel AS.

Following many other food retailers worldwide, Coop has put its trust in the automated Witron logistics solutions OPM, DPS, CPS and DPP.

This dc has a size of about 50,000 sq m and from this warehouse Coop will supply the eastern parts of Norway. The site will also cover the central warehouse function for slow moving and special items for Coop’s 850 stores in the whole of Norway.

The site will hold nearly 12,500 different articles from dry-assortment to fresh assortment (+2 degrees), as well as the frozen product assortment (- 25 degrees) and fruit and vegetable products (+7 degrees, +12 degrees).

All pallet/stacker cranes and conveyors will be built by the Witron company FAS and equipped with environmentally friendly power saving and synchronous propulsion technology.

The material flow in all stock areas and temperature zones is designed to deliver the highest logistical efficiency.

"With this technology," adds Nassvik. "We will be able to offer our customers an optimal and sustainable store-service for many years to come."

Witron will supply the design, IT and PLC controls and all mechanics. Technical service and operation of the logistics centre will be managed by Witron Onsite Team.
