White paper on logistics in the dairy industry
October 25th 2011

The dairy supply chain is shifting and adapting to a growth in new products by fundamentally modifying its logistics procedures in a number of ways, according to a white paper from automation specialist Swisslog.

- At the store level, retailers have reduced in-store inventories of dairy to make room for stocks of new SKUs, and to open up shelf space for these new products;

- Retailers are placing more frequent just-in-time orders with manufacturers; they do it for smaller quantities of a larger number of SKUs and with shorter lead times required for ordering;

- Storage requirements are being pushed back to the manufacturers, who must gear up their warehousing and distribution capabilities to handle a higher volume of SKUs

- Ensuring food safety and product reliability, with more stringent supply chain track and trace requirements being established by governments in Europe and the United States, becomes even more demanding in view of the large increase in new product SKUs

- Improving sanitation in the dairy warehouse is also a growing issue. The design of the equipment must anticipate potential spills and leakage, and meet wipe-down or heavy wash-down criteria to maintain cleanliness and sanitation.
