More data in less space April 1st 2004 Reduced Space Symbology (RSS) barcodes are a family of smaller barcode symbols that encode up to 14 digits. They have been developed by the Uniform Code Council to enable more information to be encoded in a smaller space.
They have one- and two-dimensional components based on the USS/EAN system and can include a packaging designator in the product ID to create a Global Trade Identification Number or National Drug Code, depending on the application.
Benefits claimed include: more detailed product information; improved product traceability; improved POS accuracy; reduced shrinkage; and regulatory compliance. RSS barcodes also facilitate effective product recall.
Labelling software must support RSS barcodes. The latest Prisym software, including Prisymedica does support it and is available from MAP80, a company that can provide software, integration, hardware and label stock. |
