Quality first at Pall-Ex February 1st 2007 Every night the Pall-Ex hub in Leicestershire handles between 8,500 and 10,000 pallets of freight arriving from across the UK and Europe on a total of some 200 vehicles. Within the hub the freight is sorted and transferred to its departure point and by the following morning all the pallets have left for their final destinations. It is a simple concept and a slick, smooth-running operation. Yet behind it is a complex and innovative infrastructure, designed to deliver quality of service and reliability. Pall-Ex prides itself on its ability to deliver on time, every time and to keep its members and customers continuously updated on the progress of their consignments. In 2003 the company moved to a purpose-built hub, designed specifically to provide the highest operational and environmental standards. Commercial vehicles remain outside and are loaded and unloaded under canopies. Inside the hub, the fleet of forklift trucks runs on compressed natural gas (CNG), the cleanest fuel available. Behind the scenes the transshipment operation is managed by Pall-Ex's own inhouse IT system, Pall-IT, and a bespoke track and trace system. The in-house IT team has worked to integrate electronic proof of delivery (EPOD), document scanning and real-time signature capture into the system. The result is an online, real-time track and trace system which is a key feature of Pall-Ex's drive to provide best-in-class customer service. More articles from Pall-Ex UK Ltd: |
