Bulging issues resolved August 1st 2004 In solving a transit problem for a manufacturer in the aerospace industry, the Tri-Wall design team at DS Smiths heavy duty corrugated plant has also won a 2004 StarPack Award from the Institute of Packaging.
Due to market demands the aerospace market supplier increased the weight of product shipped per pallet. As a consequence the existing packs started to bulge, becoming unsafe.
To solve the problem Tri-Wall designed a heavy duty triple fluted corrugated fitting that folds around to form a stable rectangular shape, and is secured with a jigsaw style lock. An additional panel utilises a snap rule facility for flat reverse folding against the fitting, giving three wall stacking strength with vertical fluting. The fitting fills out the container preventing any lateral or vertical product movement, while ensuring that the weight is evenly distributed across the base of the container, eliminating the bulging.
