Operation deep freeze
April 1st 2009

Crown says its ESR 5000 Cold Store Cabin makes load handling in hostile conditions as easy and stress free as possible, both for the operator – and the machine

Working at sub-zero temperatures is challenging for forklift truck operators, but even more so for the actual machines. To handle pallets and other loads efficiently, operators need more than a warm cabin. They also need a truck that doesn't break down in extreme conditions – a truck that's been optimised for the deep freeze.

Hence the launch of the ESR 5000 Cold Store Cabin: a vehicle optimised for low-temperature environments – not just cold, but deep-freeze cold at -30°C.

Keeping the truck protected...

The new truck's chassis weld seams and studs are coated with a special wax-based anticorrosion compound. Exposed electrical connections are covered with silicon sealant, and critical components are fitted with their own thermostatically controlled heaters. The motor compartment is protected by extra layers of paint and a heavy coat of clear varnish. And by using specially formulated hydraulic oil and coating all moving parts in lowtemperature grease, Crown has made sure that the truck's performance remains high even when temperatures are really low.

Keeping it part of the family...

Totally integrated with the truck, every cabin feature helps make load-handling in hostile conditions as easy and stress-free as possible. Huge heated windows with wipers front and back give high visibility in all directions – even upwards. The rugged cabin structure is constructed from profiled tubular steel, protected by an extended roof and chassis. There's even an emergency escape hatch in the roof.

It's cold outside...

Airtight windows, coupled with electronically controlled twin heaters and fans plus five adjustable air vents, mean that the cabin interior is always warm and comfortable. A wide seat with adjustable lumbar support, personal weight settings for each operator and controls built into the armrest also helps drivers stay active and alert. With a broad selection of options and a unique choice of controls (multi-task, fingertip or dual-lever), the cabin supports high-throughput performance from one end of a sub-zero shift to the other.

Bringing drivers in from the cold...

A warm, spacious, comfortable cabin is one thing – but what about access? Like a car door, the door fitted to the ESR 5000 Cold Store Cabin is front-hinged for convenience, so operators can swing easily in and out. A wide step helps keep footing secure. Other standard features such as the adjustable steering column, nested door heater, spacious desktop with clipboard and 360° visibility, mean that working in a Cold Store Cabin truck is just as productive as working in normal conditions... And so it should be.
