Environmental practices
October 1st 2004

Business to business services group, Hagemeyer UK, has been working to improve its environmental practices, and has undertaken a number of new, ground-breaking initiatives. The logistics giant is channelling energy into environmental projects, particularly centred on the operation at its NDC in Runcorn, Cheshire.

Recent environmental initiatives cover everything from protecting local wildlife to reducing traffic and increasing energy conservation. For instance, a newly introduced reverse logistics system, called backhaul, is designed to halve the amount of lorry traffic into the operation each day – by using Hagemeyer's own delivery vehicles to collect stock from suppliers on their return journeys. Through this, the company ultimately aims to cut as many as 200 traffic movements a day.

Hagemeyer is also committed to environmentally friendly initiatives such as recycling and energy conservation. It is now company policy to recycle as much raw material as possible, a scheme that has been readily supported by all the staff at the NDC.

The gas central heating systems used in the NDC use only state of the art, high efficiency LOW NOX emission boilers to limit environmental damage. Similarly, the fuel pump area of the building hosts sophisticated interceptor chambers. These prevent spillage and seepage into the surrounding water systems, helping to significantly limit the threat of water pollution to surrounding areas and wildlife.
