Distribution centralised around Link 51 racking February 1st 2007 An extensive pallet racking installation from Link 51 provides 35,000 pallet positions in four key zones The centralisation of the Poundstretcher (trading as '. . . instore') Distribution Centre at the company's Huddersfield premises is now benefiting from an extensive pallet racking installation completed by Link 51. Part of the company's move to rationalise the storage and transportation of a wide range of clothing, household, homeware and seasonal goods from a series of satellite locations, the installation features a combination of Link 51 equipment with specialist adaptations made to meet specific customer requirements. No less than 35,000 pallet positions are now available which have been divided into four key zones within the warehouse. These include bulk storage items held within a series of narrow aisle bays alongside a standard aisle replenishment zone and a further facility designed in to accommodate 'awkward-sized' items. The fourth area features a dynamic picking zone enabling the company to assemble shipping orders to meet specific outlet requirements. "Six levels of pallet racking have been installed throughout with racking widths in the standard and narrow-aisle areas up to 2.7 metres," comments Link 51's Sales Director, Keith Evans. "However, the design of the 'awkward item' area provides a facility for far larger dimensions with bays providing an overall clear width of 3.5 metres, accessible by four 5.55 metre wide aisles." Picking faces are now available to the organisation across some 40 aisles whose lengths run up to 85 metres. In all cases and at each level, Link 51 has installed pick and drop stations as an important aid to marshalling activities allowing incoming and outgoing pallets to be easily located adjacent to relevant aisles. The picking area utilises pallet live storage to ensure items placed at the rear of the installation descend towards the picking face. "We were also delighted to accommodate a key requirement specified by Poundstretcher (trading as '. . . instore') relating to the appearance of the installation," continues Keith Evans. "This called for us to paint the racking components in their house colours – helping to complete an installation that is tailor-made to reflect the client's growing success in this industry whilst giving it the capacity to grow in the future."
