Racking selection October 1st 2008 Any company seeking to to
choose the best racking for
their application needs to
ask the right questions.
According to Edward
Hutchison, managing
director of BITO Storage
Systems, information needs
to be collated on which
goods are to be stored and
load carriers used, the
dimensions/weight of the
stored goods and turnover
expected. It is also useful to
ascertain whether
automated servicing is
reasonable. Analysis of this
data can then be turned into
a coherent storage concept.
Conventional pallet
racking systems provide the
basis for many of these
concepts, for example,
drive-in pallet racking,
carton live storage with
pallet buffer stock on top
and multi-tier racking with
integrated walkways. So
providing a homogenous
range of uprights and
beams to meet customer
demands as closely as
possible in terms of load
capacity will ensure that the
customer can be offered an
optimum solution no matter
what the application.
'Classic' pallet racking
remains the most commonly
used method for storage,
allowing convenient access
to every pallet. Configurations
can be easily
modified, offering a versatile
solution for relatively low
cost. The most common
configuration is multiposition
storage with 2-4
pallets per bay. Together
with accessories, pallet
racking provides an
optimum solution for all
kinds of palletised loads or,
with the addition of
shelving, non-palletised
items.
