Stock volumes maximised
April 1st 2004

Narrow aisle cantilever racking from Pro-Dek Storage Systems, specially designed to take account of a wide variety of panel products, has enabled timber distributor, Silverman, to maximise stock volumes in a new distribution centre.

The solution chosen for the 2200m2 facility was to divide the floor space equally between block-stacking and a cantilever racking system with heavy duty floor fixed guide rails, served by multi-direction sideloaders operating in 2475mm aisles.

The racking configuration was designed by Pro-Dek to allow for four board sizes up to 3050mm wide and 2070mm deep, with pack heights from 300mm to 1100mm. The eaves height of the building was fully utilised by installing 7.5m high racking columns with top arm levels set at 6.8m. Products are stored over three arms set at column centres of 900, 1000 and 1100mm.

Arms are 1220, 1525 and 2075mm long and calculated to allow for a load of 750kg each. Each column carries six or seven arms, depending on pack size. The Pro-Bolt arms used are adjustable in 150mm increments and have a flush-fitting top connection plate. Silverman believe this has reduced stock damage by up to 7.5%.

Pro-Dek installed the racking in phases to co-ordinate with other work being carried out in the building and also advised Silverman on block stacking layouts to ensure the bulk storage was as efficient and convenient as possible.
