Tackle safety in partnership with experts

04 November 2014

The Safer Logistics campaign, which has proved a great success in Handling & Storage Solutions magazine is taking the next step in 2015, extending the campaign to an exhibition at the NEC.

Western Business Exhibitions and Handling & Storage Solutions magazine are delighted to announce the Safer Logistics Seminar Theatre and Feature Area, which will form a crucial part of The Health and Safety Event.

This major event takes place at the NEC from 24-26 March 2015.

The Health & Safety Event is officially endorsed by the International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM). The educational partner for the event is the British Safety Council and the show is supported by Safety Groups UK.

The Safer Logistics Seminar Theatre and Feature Area promises a wealth of education and advice tackling safety hot spots in warehousing and logistics.

We are pleased to announce the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA), the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA), and the Food Storage and Distribution Federation (FSDF) are involved as partners and will bring their unwavering commitment to work safety and breath of expertise to the exhibition.

Chris Sturman, CEO, The Food Storage and Distribution Federation (FSDF) says: "Having followed the Safer Logistics campaign in Handling & Storage Solutions magazine, we are very excited to see this campaign extended into the Health & Safety Event.

"This is a growing exhibition at the NEC, in the heartland of UK industry, and offers companies a great opportunity to get proactive about their safety.

"The exhibition dovetails well with our own initiatives such as the flagship Health and Safety Leadership Programme, and our Health & Safety Awards, both of which launched last year.”

Peter Harvey, CEO, Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) adds: "Fork lift trucks are the most dangerous type of workplace transport – seriously injuring as many as 800 workers each year. Engaging staff at all levels is key to reducing risk on site, so we are proud to support Safer Logistics, which shares our long-standing commitment to safety and track record for instigating change.”

This builds on the Safer Logistics campaign Handling & Storage Solutions magazine has undertaken this year and which we will continue next year.

This campaign was launched to promote health and safety awareness in logistics.

We were inspired to launch the campaign by the keynote address given by Jane Willis, cross-cutting interventions director, Health and Safety Executive at the 2013 Safety Conference held by the Fork Lift Truck Association. With the remit of the HSE growing narrower, every contribution counts and Jane encouraged managers in the industry to show leadership and ‘be part of the solution’.

As a media outlet we can help to promote health and safety awareness across the logistics and materials handling sector.

We focus on what you can do, as warehousing and logistics professionals. There are clear safety first principles that are well worth repeating.

• If you doubt the safety of a working practice, stop. Talk to your supervisor or manager and agree a safe way of proceeding. Don’t carry on and hope for the best.

• No matter who you are in the management structure or workforce, take responsibility for your safety, don’t assume someone else has taken care of it.

The campaign emphasises sound, practical principles designed to tackle ignorance and complacency in the workplace. Complacency is one of the biggest dangers as logistics employees carry out repetitive tasks day-in, and day-out and it is one of the toughest toughest problems to tackle.

It is vital to push home the message that poor health & safety practices have no place in the modern logistics world.

To borrow a phrase from a successful fork lift safety campaign carried out by Babcock International, make ‘Home safe, every day’ the priority.

The Fantastic Four

The Health & Safety Event is the flagship of a series of events representing a great use of time for visitors from virtually any industry and at any level, not just health and safety professionals. The venue in the heartland of UK industry is ideal, while the educational content addresses the most topical and pressing safety issues. The event is geared to provide a worthwhile experience for the time-pressured visitor.

The Health & Safety Event is joined by three co-located shows at the NEC - Maintec, Facilities Management, and the New Cleaning Expo, further adding value to exhibitors and attendees.

The exhibition brings together health and safety professionals from all over the UK with plant and site managers, engineers and maintenance professionals; facilities, property and estate managers; and a professional audience from the cleaning sectors, healthcare, local government and support service organisations.

Western Business Exhibitions Events Director Tim Else says: "Four complementary shows under one roof at the NEC creates the central UK hub that health & safety professionals really want - in the heart of the country.  Safety, facilities, maintenance and cleaning & hygiene suppliers will serve to provide an unsurpassed visiting experience.”
